History

By restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia in 1991 the Department of Foreign Economic Relations with Tourism Section included was established.

In 1992 Tourism Department was established within the Ministry of Transport. After reorganization of Latvian state administration apparatus in 1993 the Tourism Department was transferred from the Ministry of Transport to the newly established Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), by which the public organization Latvian Council of Tourism (LTP) was implemented and its decisions were implemented by the administration of the Latvian Council of Tourism.

Searching for the optimum administration of the tourism sector continued. With the Cabinet of Ministers decision State Tourism Administration, which was subjected to VARAM, was formed instead of LTP on 1 January 1998. After long-drawn preparatory work Saeima adopted the Tourism Law in October 1998. This created legal basis for the activity and further development of the tourism sector.

By implementing the Tourism Law, in February 1999 the Latvian Tourism Development Agency was established with the task to ensure implementation of state tourism development policy. The Latvian Tourism Development Agency was established on 1 September 2002 pursuant to the Cabinet of Ministers Decree on reorganization of Latvian Tourism Development Agency and the Law on Public Agencies.

Latvian Tourism Development Agency (LTDA) is a state institution, which is supervised by the Ministry of Economics with the Cabinet of Ministers Decree since 1 March 2003. Main priorities of LTDA activity include implementation of state tourism policy and advancement of tourism development in Latvia.
