This festival has attracted organists from near and far with the opportunity to play the 18th century organ in Liepaja’s Holy Trinity Cathedral – still the world’s largest, non-reconstructed mechanical organ. Its sound is a delight for both player and audience alike.
September 3-October 1 are the dates for this year’s festival.
This tremendous instrument has been savored by such luminaries as the Lebanese organist/composer Naji Hakim, Austrian composer/conductor/organist Martin Haselböck and Latvia’s “organ music world ambassador” – Iveta Apkalna. Many outstanding musicians have appeared at the festival over the years, a total of about 40. The same holds true this year, so we urge you plan your vacation as soon as possible, and reserve a room in one of Liepaja’s lovely and friendly hotels.
Trinity Cathedral’s architecture is late-Baroque, with Classicism contours, but its dominant is Baroque-based decorative ornateness and picturesqueness, with light/shadow contrasts. The interior, however, is more characteristic of Rococo – complete with seashell and coral motifs.
This church is open to visitors not just during services and concerts. One can climb to the steeple-top and enjoy a splendid view of the city and the Baltic Sea beyond.
